Representing Big Rock Supply, Jade and Sonny attended the Columbia, South Carolina stop, where they joined contractors and roofing professionals for a live demonstration of the PVKIT® led by Lane Haddock of S-5!.
The featured demonstration focused on the installation of the PVKit, S-5!'s rail-less solar mounting solution designed specifically for standing seam metal roofs. Unlike traditional solar mounting systems that require extensive rail installation before panels can be placed, the PVKit utilizes existing standing seams in combination with the PVKit consisting of S-5! clamps, PVKIT® MidGrab, and PVKIT® EdgeGrab to securely mount solar panels directly to the roof.
One of the key advantages highlighted during the demonstration was the speed of installation.
"That's the nice thing about PVKit. This is within an hour of being on the roof, being on-site. You're already laying glass."
Haddock explained that because there is no rail system to measure, layout, and install beforehand, crews can begin placing panels much sooner.
"First day you're on the job, you could be laying glass."
The simplicity of the system also helps eliminate many of the alignment challenges commonly associated with traditional solar installations. As Haddock demonstrated panel placement, he explained how the PVKit itself acts as a guide during installation.
"That's the cool thing about PVKit. Your PVKit is your jig. Going with a PVKit, it's nice and simple. It's going to keep your spacing nice and even."
The demonstration also emphasized one of the most important components of a successful solar installation: wire management.
Working in collaboration with EZ Solar products, the S-5! team showcased the Grip Clip, which helps secure and organize wiring directly on the panel assembly. Proper wire management not only creates a cleaner finished installation but can significantly improve efficiency on the roof.
According to Haddock, much of the preparation can be completed before panels are ever lifted into place.
"Theoretically, what you would want to have done is while you're installing these panels, you've got two guys installing and then ahead of you, you've got one guy wire managing your panels. That will keep the whole process streamlined."
By preparing and organizing wiring ahead of installation, crews can reduce unnecessary movement, limit time spent working at height, and keep the installation process moving efficiently.
That efficiency translates directly into installation speed. During the demonstration, Haddock noted that experienced crews are seeing impressive installation times.
"We've got guys installing these modules around 3–4 minutes per module."
Another important feature of the PVKit system is its integrated bonding and grounding design. Rather than requiring additional copper conductors between panel columns, bonding jumpers and bonding-and-grounding clips connect the array from panel to panel, creating a continuous bonded and grounded system while reducing material and labor requirements.
