Description
The Tramex ME5 Moisture Encounter is a non-destructive moisture meter offering dual-depth measurement—shallow up to approximately 0.40″ (10 mm) and deep up to approximately 1.25″ (30 mm). It features five sensitivity ranges suited to wood & timber, drywall & roofing, plaster & tile, masonry and other building envelope materials. The unit uses a low-frequency electrical signal via base electrodes and displays results on an analog dial, making it suitable for locating, documenting and monitoring moisture conditions in floors, walls and roofs.
Key features:
-
Dual-depth non-destructive measurement capability for surface and deeper moisture detection
-
Five sensitivity ranges adapted for wood, drywall, roofing, plaster, tile and masonry
-
Analog dial display simplifies rapid reading in field conditions
-
Compact, rugged ABS-body design with included batteries allows fast deployment on job sites

How To
- Clean the surface of the material being tested and ensure electrodes are free of debris.
-
Power on the ME5 and select the appropriate sensitivity range for the material type (wood, drywall, roofing, plaster, masonry).
-
Place the meter firmly on the test surface until the contact electrodes settle appropriately.
-
Read the moisture content indicator from the analog dial noting shallow or deep depth mode based on material thickness.
-
Compare readings against allowable moisture thresholds for the specific material and environment to determine condition or need for remediation.
FAQs
Q: What materials can the ME5 test for moisture?
A: It can test wood and timber, drywall and roofing, plaster and tile, and masonry materials using the appropriate sensitivity range.
Q: How deep can the ME5 measure moisture?
A: The ME5 provides shallow-signal penetration up to approximately 0.40″ (10 mm) and deep-signal penetration up to approximately 1.25″ (30 mm).
Q: Is the ME5 non-destructive?
A: Yes, the ME5 performs non-destructive moisture testing by using electrical impedance signals instead of probes or drilling.
Q: What is the reference scale for readings on the ME5 for general building materials?
A: The reference scale for building materials is 0 to 100.
