A self-retracting lifeline is designed to limit the shock load to the body of a worker by limiting the distance of a fall. This makes them attractive pieces of equipment to use as a lifeline while working at heights, but not all fall hazards are the same. When working near a leading edge, a standard portable SRL is not an adequate choice. The components of most SRLs are not tested to stand up to the sharp edges that could be encountered when you tie-off at foot level. The Leading Edge 30’ SRL with snap hook features a 360° swivel top connection point that allows the durable thermoplastic housing to rotate as you move and boasts a sturdy galvanized steel cable with built-in strike test grip. The SRL extends as the user moves away from the anchor point and retracts as the user moves back toward the anchorage point. The ANSI Class 2 rating features a versatile design, allowing for use above and below the back D-Ring. The Malta Dynamics Leading Edge Self-Retracting Lifeline with Snap Hook is tested to meet the strict standards of ANSI Z359.14-2021 Class 2, ANSI A10.32-12, OSHA 1926 Subpart M and OSHA 1910.

Here are some tips on how to successfully perform a pre-use inspection of your self-retracting lifeline.

Examine Metal Components:

1. The Fall Indicator: located at the connection point on your SRL. When the force indicator has been tripped, it indicates that fall-like impact forces have been applied on the self-retracting lifeline. If the fall indicator has been tripped, you will see a red indicator at the connection point and the device should be immediately removed from service.
2. The Snap Hook: Ensure the mechanism opens and closes properly. Press on the gate to confirm it cannot be forced open. Please check to validate that the snap hook is not bent or deformed in any way.

Inspect the Housing:

1. Ensure all fasteners are present and tight.
2. Inspect the label for serial number, batch number, manufacture date and part number.

Inspect the Cable:

1. If the cable gets tangled in the housing, it is no longer adequate for arresting a fall.
2. Inspect the entire length of the cable for cuts, burns, frays, kinks, or tears.

Perform a Strike Test:

1. Grip the handle and quickly pull downward on the cable, place all the force above the fall indicator so you do not accidentally trigger it.
2. This will test the braking mechanism of your SRL
