Description
The Tramex RWS Roof & Wall Scanner is a handheld, non-destructive moisture-scanning device built to evaluate moisture conditions in roofing membranes, foam insulation systems and exterior insulation finishing systems (EIFS). The instrument uses low-frequency impedance signals delivered through base electrodes to detect excess moisture and trace the source of leaks or elevated moisture. The scanner features dual operating modes (Roofing and EIFS/Wall) with selectable sensitivity ranges and displays results via a clear analog dial. It is lightweight, battery-operated and designed for rapid field-use in commercial roofing and building envelope surveys.
Key features:
-
Multi-mode operation with separate settings for Roofing and EIFS/Wall systems, each with high and low sensitivity ranges
-
Non-destructive impedance method enabling moisture scanning without drilling or surface penetration
-
Analog dial display with 0–100 reference scale and audible alert for elevated readings
-
Lightweight handheld design with telescopic handle option and battery operation for on-site field use

How To
- Ensure the surface is free of debris and the unit’s electrodes are in full contact with the substrate.
-
Select the appropriate operating mode (Roofing or EIFS/Wall) and set the sensitivity range (high or low) based on substrate thickness and insulation type.
-
Place the scanner firmly onto the surface, calibrate on a known dry area if possible, then move the unit in a grid pattern while observing for elevated readings.
-
When a higher reading is detected, use the “hold” function (if available) and mark or record the location for further investigation.
-
Follow up high-value zones with pin-probe or other verification methods as needed, then compile scan data for reporting or remediation planning.
FAQs
Q: What types of construction systems can the RWS scan?
A: It is designed for roofs (non-conductive single ply, built-up, modified bitumen, foam systems) and wall envelope systems including EIFS and foam insulation.
Q: How deep into the substrate can the RWS scan?
A: The unit can scan up to approximately 4″ (100 mm) deep into roofing or wall insulation systems.
Q: Does the RWS method damage the surface being scanned?
A: No – it uses a non-destructive impedance scanning method that does not require drilling or sampling.
Q: Is the RWS portable and suitable for field use?
A: Yes – it is battery-operated (9-Volt PP3), lightweight (~1.88 lbs), and includes an optional telescopic handle for roof use to facilitate field scanning.
